Overview

The Jujube is a small, date-like fruit that grows on a shrub or small tree. It has been cultivated for thousands of years and is popular in both cuisine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The fruit is rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants. In herbal hair care, powders from related Ziziphus species are excellent for those who want the strengthening benefits of Henna without any color change.

  • French: Jujube
  • German: Jujube, Chinesische Dattel
  • Chinese: Hóngzǎo (红枣)
  • Arabic: ﻋﻧﺎب (Unnab)
  • Spanish: Azufaifo, Jínjol
  • Russian: Зизифус (Zizifus)
  • Japanese: ナツメ (Natsume)

While less common in herbal hair care than other herbs, Ziziphus powder (often from the leaves, Z. spina-christi) is used similarly to Cassia Obovata. It cleanses the hair, adds volume and shine, and provides conditioning benefits without altering hair color. The fruit powder (Z. jujuba) is used in traditional medicine as a blood purifier, a digestive aid, and a calming tonic that helps to soothe anxiety and promote sleep.

  • For a Non-Coloring Hair Mask: Mix Ziziphus powder with warm water to create a paste. Apply to clean, damp hair and leave on for 30-60 minutes. Rinse thoroughly for stronger, shinier hair.
  • As a Calming Tea: A tea made from the fruit powder can be consumed in the evening to help soothe the nerves and prepare for sleep.
