Overview

Ginger is the gnarled, aromatic rhizome of a tropical flowering plant. It is one of the most widely used dietary condiments and medicinal herbs in the world. Its primary bioactive compound is gingerol, which is responsible for much of its pungent flavor and its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The powder, made from dried ginger (Sonth), has a more pungent and less sharp flavor than fresh ginger.

Ginger is known as Vishwabhesaj, the “universal medicine,” in Ayurveda. Its pungent and heating nature makes it a powerful digestive stimulant that pacifies Vata and Kapha. It is used to ignite the digestive fire (Agni), relieve nausea and indigestion, and clear congestion from the lungs and sinuses. It is a key ingredient in the Trikatu formula and a staple in almost every Indian kitchen.

  • For a Soothing Digestive Tea: Steep half a teaspoon of ginger powder in hot water with a squeeze of lemon and a touch of honey. This is a classic remedy for colds, coughs, and indigestion.
  • As a Foundational Spice: Use ginger powder in the base of curries, marinades, and baked goods to provide a warm, spicy foundation.
  • For Nausea Relief: A simple tea made from ginger powder can be effective in calming nausea and motion sickness.
