OUR CERTIFICATIONS

Overview

While the stalks of culinary rhubarb are eaten in desserts, the medicinal rhubarb uses the rhizome of a different species, typically Rheum emodi (Himalayan Rhubarb). The root contains potent compounds called anthraquinones (similar to Senna), which are responsible for its strong laxative and purgative effects.

French: Rhubarbe
German: Rhabarberwurzel
Chinese: Dàhuáng (大黄)
Arabic: راو د (Rawand)
Spanish: Ruibarbo
Russian: Ревень (Reven’)
Japanese: ルバーブ (Rubābu), 大黄 (Daiō)

The root of the Rhubarb plant is a powerful purgative and detoxifying herb in Ayurveda. Known as Amlavetasa, its primary action is to cleanse the liver and colon. It has a heating potency and is used to pacify Kapha and Vata. It is used for severe constipation and to purge toxins from the body. In very small doses, its astringent quality can help with diarrhea.

For Therapeutic Purgation (Practitioner Guidance Required): Traditionally, a small dose of the powder is administered with hot water as part of a supervised Ayurvedic detox program to cleanse the system.
