Overview

Sharpunkha is a perennial herb that grows wild in wastelands throughout India. The entire plant is used in Ayurvedic medicine for its potent diuretic, detoxifying, and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains flavonoids and rotenoids, which contribute to its therapeutic effects, especially on the liver.

  • French: Tephrosia pourpre
  • German: Purpur-Tephrosie
  • Chinese: Zǐ suì huīzhì (紫穗槐直)
  • Arabic: أرﺟواﻧﯾﺔ ﺗﻔروﺳﯾﺎ (Tephrosia ‘urjuwania)
  • Spanish: Tephrosia púrpura
  • Russian: Тефрозия пурпурная (Tefroziya purpurnaya)
  • Japanese: テフロシア・プルプレア (Tefuroshia purupurea)

Sharpunkha is a highly regarded herb in Ayurveda for its specific action on the liver and spleen. Its name denotes its arrow-shaped leaflets. It is used to support liver health in conditions like jaundice and cirrhosis, helping to detoxify and rejuvenate the organ. It is also beneficial for spleen health and acts as a blood purifier, which in turn helps to manage various skin diseases.

  • For Liver & Spleen Support: A decoction is made by boiling 1 tsp of the powder in 2 cups of water until it reduces by half. This is taken once or twice daily under the guidance of a practitioner.
  • As a Face Pack: A paste of the powder can be mixed with honey and applied to the skin to help manage acne and boils due to its blood-purifying nature.
