Overview

Sabja seeds are the seeds of the sweet basil plant (Ocimum basilicum), not to be confused with the holy basil (Tulsi) or Chia seeds. These tiny black seeds are packed with soluble fiber, which is responsible for their ability to swell and create a gel. They are a staple ingredient in Indian and Southeast Asian desserts and refreshing beverages, especially during the hot summer months.

French: Graines de basilic doux
German: Süßbasilikumsamen
Chinese: Luólè zǐ (罗勒籽)
Arabic: ذور ا ر ن (Budhur al-rayhan)
Spanish: Semillas de albahaca dulce
Russian: Семена сладкого базилика (Semena sladkogo bazilika)
Japanese: スイートバジルシード (Suīto bajiru shīdo)

Sabja seeds are a traditional cooling food in Ayurveda, renowned for their ability to reduce body heat, making them perfect for pacifying the Pitta dosha. When soaked, they become gelatinous and are used in cooling drinks like falooda. They are rich in fiber, which aids digestion and relieves constipation. They are also known to be a natural coolant and diuretic.

For a Cooling Beverage: Soak 1-2 teaspoons of Sabja seeds in a cup of water for 15-20 minutes until they swell. Add this jelly-like mixture to lemonade, milkshakes, or rose sherbet for a refreshing and hydrating drink.
For Digestive Support: The soaked seeds can be consumed to help with constipation and provide a soothing effect on the stomach.
