Overview

Nutmeg is the seed of the Myristica fragrans tree, an evergreen native to the Spice Islands. The same fruit also produces another spice, Mace, which is the lacy covering of the seed. Nutmeg’s warm, sweet flavor makes it a favorite in baked goods, custards, and warm beverages around the world.

Nutmeg, or Jaiphal, is a treasured spice in Ayurveda, known for its calming and digestive properties. It is a warming spice that pacifies Vata and Kapha. It is most famously used as a natural sedative, helping to calm the mind and promote deep, restful sleep. It is also a carminative, used in small amounts to relieve gas and improve digestion.

  • For Promoting Sleep: Add a tiny pinch (a little goes a long way) of nutmeg powder to a cup of warm milk and drink before bedtime.
  • As a Flavoring Spice: Use freshly grated or powdered nutmeg in custards, rice pudding (kheer), coffee, and baked goods like pumpkin pie and spice cakes.
  • Note: Nutmeg should be used in small culinary amounts. Large doses can be toxic.
